Ayurvedic program overview

At the Yoga Veda Institute of Ayurvedic Medicine (YVIAM), we believe that Ayurvedic education thrives on deep personal connections. Our program was designed not only to equip you for the National Ayurvedic Medical Association Board Exam (NAMACB) but to guide you on a fulfilling life path in Ayurvedic medicine that goes beyond the textbooks. We know that you are beginning a lifelong exploration of Ayurveda, and we are honored to be your guide on that journey.  As stewards of Ayurvedic wisdom, we hold that responsibility as sacred. That’s why here you’re not just a student — you’re family.

Inside OUR Program
What Sets Us Apart

We’re Different By Design

At the core of our philosophy is a commitment to an education that’s not just keeping pace with the digital era but is deeply rooted in it.  Since our very first cohort, our program has been designed for online delivery, making us pioneers in developing an unparalled Ayurvedic learning experience tailored for the digital landscape.

Tailored for Online Learners

While many schools experienced a sudden transition to online learning, our program was purposefully designed for the digital landscape from its inception. This intentional decision guarantees that our students benefit from a consistent, high-quality education, no matter where they are located. Unlike hybrid models that often prioritize in-person attendees, our approach ensures that every student is an equal participant in a dynamic, interactive online community. Through state-of-the-art digital platforms, our students receive full support and engagement, creating a truly inclusive and enriching learning environment.

Access to Global Thought Leaders

One of the most exciting advantages of our online-first approach is our ability to bring you leaders and innovators from around the world. While traditional schools might be constrained by geography, limiting their  lecturers to those who can physically come to campus, we transcend these boundaries. This means our students are exposed to a diverse range of perspectives and expertise, learning directly from pioneers and thought leaders in Ayurveda. It’s a unique opportunity to engage with the best, without the limitations of location.

A Rich, Interactive Learning Experience

Our students benefit from a curriculum that’s not just broadcast online but designed to leverage the strengths of the digital medium. Interactive coursework, dynamic discussion forums, and live sessions with instructors and peers create a learning environment that’s engaging, supportive, and conducive to deep understanding. This model ensures that every student, without exception, has access to the resources, attention, and support they need to succeed.

Flexible Clinical Opportunities

Recognizing the value of hands-on experience in Ayurveda, we offer our students the option to participate in in-person clinical experiences. This blend of online theoretical learning with optional physical experiences provides a flexible pathway to gaining practical skills, without imposing it as a requirement for everyone. Our priority is to accommodate the diverse needs and circumstances of our student body, offering pathways to success that are as individual as the students themselves.

In shaping our programs, our focus has always been on what our students will gain: a comprehensive, engaging, and equitable education that prepares them for the challenges and opportunities of the future. By choosing to study with us, you’re not just enrolling in an Ayurvedic program—you’re joining a community that’s at the forefront of digital education, committed to providing an exceptional, personal, connected learning experience for every  student.

Time Commitment

Our Ayurvedic Programs are mindfully structured for your success as a student.  We recognize that the way you approach your education in Ayurveda should be tailored to your personal life.  We have thoughtfully structured our program so that you can approach it in a way that fits seamlessly into the ebbs and flows of your life.  In truth, each students path in our program is unique, and just right.

Spanning over four trimesters for the Ayurvedic Health Counselor and Ayurvedic Practitioner programs, and eight trimesters for the Dual Certification, each trimester unfolds across a 12-week term, with three trimesters offered each year in the Fall (October), Winter (January) and Spring (April).   Summers are periods of academic rest that you will have to pause your studies.  There are no live classes to commit to over the summer.

To accommodate you and the different rhythms of life that will surly arise for you as a student during your time with us, Ayurvedic Health Counselor and Ayurvedic Practitioner students have up to three years, while Dual Certification students are given up to six years to complete your program of study with no additional fees.

You may choose to take 1 to 3 classes per trimester, aligning your academic growth with personal commitments. For optimal learning, we recommend setting aside roughly 10 hours per week per class that you choose to take.

Here, you’ll not only immerse yourself in Ayurvedic wisdom but you’ll also be invited to apply it through interactive study and practical experience, all tailored to your individual pace.

If you’d like to see a high level overview of the class schedule for the coming year, please refer to our course catalog.

Certification & Titles Upon Graduation

Our Ayurvedic program offers you two distinct paths: a formal certification with in-person training, recognized by the Ayurvedic Accreditation Commission (AAC) qualifying graduates for the NAMACB board exam, and an online-only route leading to a Certificate in Ayurvedic Studies. Both pathways maintain the same rigorous curriculum and are designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of Ayurvedic principles and practices.  Most students in our program join the online-only route, and many choose at a later time to participate in the in-person training.  You may at any time in your online-only program, choose to join the formal certification path.

  • Formal Certifications (With In-Person Training):

    • Ayurvedic Health Counselor and Ayurvedic Practitioner programs require 600 and 1500 hours of study, respectively, including in-person training.
    • Graduates are eligible to sit for the NAMACB board exam.
  • Online Certifications (Without In-Person Training):

    • Ayurvedic Wellness Counselor and Ayurvedic Wellness Practitioner offer fully online coursework for 600 and 1500 hours, respectively.
    • Graduates receive a Certificate in Ayurvedic Studies.

The choice between these paths depends on your personal goals, with both providing a solid foundation in Ayurveda. Formal certification is recommended for those seeking board certification, while the online certificate offers flexibility for those who prefer a fully remote learning experience.

Program Completion Titles (AAC/NAMACB)

Ayurvedic Health Counselor (AHC)

  • Requirements: 600 hours of study, including in-person components.
  • Outcome: Eligibility to sit for the NAMACB board exam.

Ayurvedic Practitioner (AP)

  • Requirements: 1500 hours of study, covering all in-person training.
  • Outcome: Qualifies graduates to sit for the NAMACB board exam.

Alternative Certifications for Online Study (Not AAC / NAMACB Recognized)

Ayurvedic Wellness Counselor (AWC)

  • Requirements: 600 hours of fully online study.
  • Outcome: Certificate in Ayurvedic Studies without in-person training.

Ayurvedic Wellness Practitioner (AWP)

  • Requirements: 1500 hours of fully online study.
  • Outcome: Certificate in Ayurvedic Studies, excluding in-person components.

Both educational tracks ensure a deep dive into Ayurvedic medicine, tailored to fit different learning styles and career aspirations. Whether you’re seeking formal certification or prefer the convenience of online study, our programs are mindfully designed to give you the knowledge and skills needed to excel in the field of Ayurveda.

Prerequisite/Co-requisite

Anatomy & Physiology Co-requisite

All AAC Recognized Ayurvedic programs require all students to have completed 6 college-level credits of Anatomy and Physiology prior to graduation.  Important to note that this is not a pre-requisite and is not required to complete before you enroll, but must be completed before you are able to apply for graduation.

Typically recognized as Anatomy and Physiology I and Anatomy and Physiology II in the USA, this equates to a combined total of 90 hours of classroom instruction from an accredited institution, whether through a community college or virtual campus. These credits must be explicitly earned in courses titled “Anatomy & Physiology” at the collegiate level.

To fulfill the co-requisite for the Ayurvedic program, you will be required to provide official documentation—either a certificate or transcripts—confirming the completion of 6 college-level credits or 90 hours of classroom instruction in Anatomy & Physiology. This documentation should clearly state your name, the specific course title as “Anatomy & Physiology,” and the credits or hours that you completed.

Please note, completion of a Yoga Training Course, even if it includes content on Anatomy & Physiology, does not meet this co-requisite. Fulfilling this requirement within your program’s timeframe is essential for graduation.

If you have not yet completed any formal training in Anatomy and Physiology, you can browse the courses that our students recommend.

Gurukul Clinical Preceptorship

At Yoga Veda Institute, we revere the Gurukul tradition, where the sacred bond between a teacher and student is central to the transmission of Ayurveda’s ancient wisdom. This tradition is more than an educational exchange; it is the heartbeat of Ayurveda, nurturing the spiritual core and stweardship of Ayurvedic wisdom.

Through this time-honored approach, we offer a genuine Ayurvedic education that weaves the threads of age-old knowledge with the vibrant potential of modern application. Within these experiences, you are shepherded by devoted preceptors who are not just educators but custodians of Ayurveda’s enduring legacy, dedicated to empowering you as a healer of tomorrow.

For our students, the preceptorship is an integral component of their educational experience. Ayurvedic Health Counselors are required to complete 180 hours, while Ayurvedic Practitioners must fulfill an additional 360 hours of preceptorship. These hours are a portal to hands-on learning and a deeper immersion into the practical aspects of Ayurveda.

Options for engaging with a preceptor are diverse:

  • Volunteer Positions: Offer your service in exchange for invaluable learning and mentorship.
  • Paid Positions: Work in a professional environment, gaining experience while earning compensation.
  • Intensive Courses: Participate in one of our approved preceptor programs that combine mentorship with clinical practice.

Preceptorship is required for students pursuing NAMACB board certification through our AAC recogized program.

International students and students who are not planning to sit the board exam are not required to complete in person study.

These students have the option to complete the full curriculum of study through our comprehensive weekly clinical internship class, conducted on our virtual campus.

This adaptable approach ensures that our program meets the diverse needs and goals of our international student community.

The ethos of our course demands integrity, honesty, and a profound respect for truth and compassion. Therefore, we hold our students to the highest standards of academic integrity. Students at Yoga Veda Institute are anticipated to embody responsibility and honesty, engaging with peers and faculty respectfully within our community. Active participation is crucial; this includes punctual and consistent class attendance, online engagement, timely coursework completion, and exam participation.

Web-conference classes should mirror the decorum of an on-campus classroom—professional conduct, respectful communication, and appropriate attire are expected, along with a suitable learning environment. The use of offensive language or behavior is strictly prohibited.

For optimal interaction in web-conference sessions, students must use a camera and microphone, unless advised otherwise by the instructor. Attending classes while driving is prohibited, and participation should occur in a quiet space, ideally with a computer to ensure full engagement—some class activities may not be suitable for mobile devices.

Designed for Success

Designed to be online from our inception, Yoga Veda Institute’s Distance Program is designed for the Ayurvedic student that needs the freedom from location and time flexibility that distance education offers. As valuable as this freedom is to the needs of many students, many students find that they need certain elements of structure in order to be successful in their program.

Students are most likely to be successful in the YVI distance program if they:

  1. Are self-directed learners
  2. Are able to work independently
  3. Have access to local clinical opportunities
Freedom of Location

Students are able to complete their academic studies wherever they live in the world. Students must have access to the internet (high-speed options highly recommended), and have word processing and printing capabilities.

Clinical Training

Students complete their clinical training with an approved local preceptor and through our online internship program. Students may wish to identify appropriate clinical training options prior to entering the YVI program. For those students who find travel to be an impossibility – various other options are available including transferring clinical studies from another recognized institution, working with a pre-approved faculty preceptor, or graduating as a non-certificate seeking student.

Time Flexibility

Students are able to complete academic and clinical work on their own time schedules. Students begin courses at the same time throughout the year; however, a student may find that they need extra time to complete a course. Students are encouraged to finish their courses within a trimester but may extend a course if necessary. Instructors, preceptors, and school mentors are available to support each student’s success in reaching their goals and moving through the program.

Major Maps

Major Maps are course completion schedules that students develop with the YVI Student Advisor. Major Maps allow students to see what course work must be completed within each trimester to meet the student’s graduation goal date. Major Maps give structure to the flexibility of YVI course work.

Financial Options & Incentives

YVI students do not need to worry about gathering a large sum of tuition all at once in order to finance their education. YVI offers students reasonable extended payment plans to make this program accessible.

The tuition covers all credits enrolled in at the beginning of each trimester.

Students can take as few or as many credits as they wish each trimester.

The Ayurvedic Practitioner program is designed to be completed in 2 years (6 trimesters). Students may take up to 6 years (18 trimesters) to complete the program with no additional fees.

Students who opt to pay in full at the time of enrollment will benefit from an additional 20% Pay In Full Savings.  There are no additional fees.  Additional payments will only be billed should the student take longer than the allotted timeframe to graduate, at which time will be billed at the published trimester tuition rate for each additional enrolled trimester.

ACCESSIBLE

Students can take as few or as many credits as they wish each trimester of enrollment.

Because the tuition covers all of the credits students who wish to take more credits will progress through the program faster.

THREE TrimesterS

The YVI  academic year is divided into three trimesters.
Winter — January through March
Spring — April through June
Fall — October through December

Students may begin at any time throughout the year.  Live classes commence at the beginning of each trimester. This encourages students to complete course work by the end of the trimester so that they can enroll in additional courses for the next trimester. The trimester system also allows students to begin new courses with other students at the same time, making student study groups more effective.

Personal Coaching

Personal coaching is a unique service that YVI offers students enrolled in the distance program. Students have access to a student advisor throughout their program. Student advisors can help students identify and overcome progress challenges, suggest Major Map changes, and provide accountability and support through the student’s program.

Peer Groups

For some distance education students, isolation is a concern. YVI strives to mitigate isolation through healthy learning communities and peer-led support groups. An affinity group of peers creates relationships and a culture of accountability to each other. YVI is providing Ayurvedic education wherever there is an internet connection!

Our students are building electronic communities across platforms and geographies!

What is the Importance of Accreditation?

In the competitive realm of education, accreditation is not just a badge of honor—it's a beacon of quality and a testament to an institution's commitment to excellence. However, the landscape is varied, and not all accreditations carry the same weight.

Some institutions may showcase accreditations that lack rigorous oversight or even tout credentials of questionable legitimacy. This is where discernment is key, especially when considering the significance of accreditation from esteemed bodies like the Ayurvedic Accreditation Commission (AAC).

Accreditation: The Benchmark of Excellence

Accreditation is the result of a voluntary, rigorous review process that educational institutions undergo to ensure they meet comprehensive standards of quality education. It's a seal of approval that signals to students, employers, and the wider community that the institution adheres to high-quality educational practices and is committed to ongoing improvement.

AAC: A Standard of Trust

The AAC is a pillar in the Ayurvedic educational community, recognized for its stringent accreditation standards. The AAC's exhaustive review process examines all facets of an institution's offerings—from its curriculum and faculty credentials to its learning resources and institutional support. This ensures that AAC-accredited programs are not only up to par with current educational standards but are also poised to prepare students for professional success in Ayurveda.

The Pitfalls of Unverified Accreditations

On the flip side, there are institutions with unverified accreditations that could potentially mislead students. These may involve minimal oversight or none at all, where the "accreditation" is granted upon payment rather than a substantive evaluation of standards. Such practices dilute the value of accreditation and potentially jeopardize the quality of education delivered.

Ongoing Assessment: The Heart of Accreditation

True accreditation involves continuous reassessment and renewal. Organizations like AAC don't just assess once; they maintain a cycle of regular reviews to ensure institutions continue to meet evolving educational standards and industry demands. This ongoing scrutiny fosters institutions' growth and adaptability, ensuring that the education provided keeps pace with the dynamic field of Ayurveda.

Why It Matters for Your Future

The implications of accreditation extend far beyond the classroom. Graduating from an AAC-accredited program can significantly enhance your professional credibility and open doors to employment opportunities that would otherwise remain closed. Employers and professional bodies often look for this accreditation as proof of a candidate's competent background.

As you navigate your educational choices, remember that AAC accreditation is more than a formality—it's a promise of quality and an investment in your future as a professional in the world of Ayurveda. So choose wisely, with the assurance that an AAC-accredited education is designed to propel you toward success and fulfillment in your Ayurvedic practice.

The increasing pursuit of balance and holistic health in our dynamic world has heightened the appeal of Ayurveda, with more people than ever turning to its ancient wisdom for natural wellness solutions.

This role is pivotal in guiding clients towards a harmonious state of health across body, mind, and spirit.

Your guidance can lead others to embrace Ayurvedic principles as part of their daily regimen for enhanced wellness.

What is Yoga Veda's academic approach?

Ayurveda's recent rise in popularity reflects an increasing global shift towards holistic health and wellness. In response, numerous institutions now offer Ayurvedic education, each with its unique approach. Some assert a narrow focus on Ayurveda’s medicinal aspects is superior, criticizing institutions like Yoga Veda Institute for integrating yoga, spirituality, astrology, and Hindu philosophy into our curriculum. However, such a perspective overlooks the holistic essence of Ayurveda.

Yoga Veda Institute’s Comprehensive Approach:

Ayurveda is inherently holistic, encompassing the intricate balance of body, mind, and spirit, and our relationship with the cosmos. Reducing Ayurveda to merely its medicinal component overlooks the rich tapestry of holistic knowledge that is essential for a thorough understanding of this ancient science.

Embracing Interdisciplinary Synergy:

At Yoga Veda Institute, we recognize the synergistic relationship between Ayurveda and disciplines like yoga, astrology, and Hindu philosophy:

  • Yoga and Ayurveda: These sister sciences offer complementary perspectives on health. Our curriculum integrates yoga to deepen the understanding of the mind-body connection and promote healing practices that align with Ayurvedic principles.

  • Astrology: Far from mere fortune-telling, astrology in the context of Ayurveda offers insights into an individual’s constitution and health predispositions, enabling personalized Ayurvedic care.

  • Hindu Philosophy: The philosophical underpinnings of Ayurveda are rooted in Hindu thought, which informs the ethical, moral, and spiritual dimensions of healing practices.

Beyond Mediocrity:

The assertion that a broad curriculum leads to mediocrity is a misconception. At Yoga Veda Institute, our curriculum is meticulously structured to integrate these disciplines without sacrificing depth or academic rigor. Our students graduate with a rich understanding of Ayurveda's multifaceted nature, well-prepared to apply this knowledge holistically.

Holistic Understanding and Application:

While some may prefer an exclusively clinical focus, the true power of Ayurveda lies in its holistic application. A comprehensive education in Ayurveda, enriched with yoga, astrology, and philosophy, equips our graduates with a profound toolkit that enhances their practice and offers a well-rounded approach to health and wellness.

At Yoga Veda Institute, we are committed to honoring the depth and breadth of Ayurveda. Our graduates emerge not only as skilled practitioners but as custodians of a tradition that harmonizes the physical with the spiritual, the individual with the universal—a holistic vision for a healthy and balanced life.

How do I choose an Ayurvedic Program?

The global resurgence of Ayurveda as a holistic wellness system has sparked a renewed interest in Ayurvedic education. For those drawn to its healing philosophy and eager to delve deeper into its practices, selecting the right school is a pivotal decision.

Here are key considerations to help you choose an institution that will provide a rich and authentic learning experience in Ayurveda:

Accreditation and Recognition: Research schools that have earned accreditation from reputable Ayurvedic authorities. Accreditation is more than a formality; it's an assurance of educational excellence and adherence to high standards. Confirm the school's credentials, the legitimacy of the accrediting bodies, the experience of the faculty, and the depth of the programs offered.

Comprehensive Curriculum: A robust curriculum is the backbone of quality Ayurvedic education. It should encompass not only the core principles of Ayurveda but also offer extensive insights into its diagnostic and treatment modalities, pharmacology, nutrition, and practical application. The best programs blend rigorous academic inquiry with hands-on practice.

Qualified and Experienced Faculty: Instructors should be more than academics; they should be seasoned practitioners with a wealth of clinical experience. Their expertise will enrich your education, providing real-world context and invaluable mentorship. Investigate their professional backgrounds to ensure you'll be learning from the best.

Practical Training: Ayurveda is a practice-oriented discipline. Ensure the school offers ample clinical training opportunities, where you can apply classroom learning to actual patient care under expert supervision. These experiences are crucial for honing your skills as a practitioner.

Reputation and Alumni Network: The school's standing within the Ayurvedic community and the success of its alumni are strong indicators of program quality. Seek out alumni testimonials and career outcomes to gauge the school's impact on its graduates' professional lives.

Flexible Learning Options: Whether you need a full-time, part-time, or online learning format, the school should accommodate your personal circumstances without compromising educational integrity. For online programs, verify that they provide interactive, engaging learning experiences equivalent to in-person instruction.

Nurturing Educational Environment: A supportive atmosphere can significantly enhance your academic journey. Small class sizes, favorable student-to-teacher ratios, and individualized attention contribute to a nurturing environment. The school should encourage collaboration, inclusivity, and active student participation.

Choosing the right Ayurvedic school is a step toward a successful and fulfilling career. By carefully considering accreditation, curriculum breadth, faculty expertise, practical training, institutional reputation, flexible learning formats, and the overall learning environment, you'll find an institution that not only meets your educational needs but also aligns with your passion for Ayurveda.
